On June 3, 2018, Volcan de Fuego in the Sacatepéquez Department of Guatemala erupted violently. Volcan de Fuego is an active volcano that emits small eruptions regularly, however on June 3rd the intensity and outcome was incredibly deadly. The departments of Esquintla, Chimaltenango, and Sacatepéquez were impacted severely, experiencing the brunt of the loss of life.
Original reports put the missing and deceased at a little over 100. Shortly after that number was raised to over 300. The reality, that our Executive Direcor learned while she was there for the month of June, and that we are finally seeing reports of, is that the real number of lives lost is likely almost 3000 Guatemalans.
Relief funds will be directed to the organization and volunteers we know will be able to deliver direct, need-based impact. The Foundation for Higher Good in Columbia, Missouri in collaboration with Sally and Ron Widbin, volunteers and relief workers who live in Guatemala near the volcano disaster zone, will be the stewards of the relief funds.
This will allow funds to go directly where they are needed most, ensure that funds are spent as intended, and allow real-time communication and updates in the form of video and reports from the on-the-ground mission workers there.
