Currently, we teach Open Books, Open Minds in a variety of schools throughout Guatemala. Some are public and some are private. The commitment from the school leadership and community are important factors in deciding where we should dedicate our resources, as is the need in a particular area. This way, we ensure a true partnership that will be sustainable and produce long-lasting results.
We are also always seeking out new partner schools interested in making a commitment to implement our program.
Assessment is another important component of our program. We test the children’s reading ability, using internationally recognized standards, before and after they complete a year of Open Books, Open Minds. We are excited to report that at the end of our first year, our first graders were reading at a level almost equal to the third graders who were not in our program!
